Genesis 2:16-17 One Simple Commandment

"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

One simple commandment, don’t eat of the tree in the middle of the garden. As you read this, please keep in mind that G-d directly commands Adam, not Eve. Eve has not been created. Is this important? Never know. Just keep it in mind. Also, notice that the tree of life was not included in this commandment. Adam and Eve enjoyed a life free of death. They would have lived forever.

Back to the tree of good and evil. Was it a tree that would automatically give the eater knowledge of good and evil? I don’t believe so. It was simply an object lesson. Pure and simple, once someone was commited to eat of the tree, they would have, with fore thought and contemplation, disobeyed G-d and that is what evil is, disobeying G-d.

  1. Yeah,

I hear it said once that evil is not necessarily a force but more an action.

  2. Isn't funny how people call the wrong things evil? Satan loves to blur the lines.

  5. I agree with the tree being a lesson, but then why call it that? Maybe it should have been called "tree of innocence lost if you eat of it". Scripture does say that their eyes were opened. I wonder how close these trees were to each other. Because if they were close to each then maybe the decision would have been easier to make, like "wow, that tree looks good but this one over here is the one allowed". But if they were far apart from each other, then Adam and Eve were playing with fire to begin with. Why would they even venture over to that one? So they probably knew right from wrong, but the purity of their existence was shattered.

  6. It has always fascinated me that if we turn the word 'evil' around it becomes 'live'. The fact that we have been given the ability to learn Gods ways again through the teaching of the Holy Spirit means that what the first earthly Adam did when He ate the fruit of the forbidden tree can be reversed and eternal life can now be attained.
